- 1/4 cup fresh mint leaves plus a sprig for garnish
- 1 oz simple syrup made by dissolving 1 part sugar in 1 part hot water
- Crushed ice
- 4-6 oz sparkling water or club soda
- Optional: A squeeze of fresh lime juice
Muddle the Mint: Place the fresh mint leaves and the simple syrup in a julep cup or a tall glass. Gently press the mint leaves with the back of a spoon to release their fragrant oils. Do not crush the leaves too much, as this can make the drink bitter.
Add Crushed Ice: Fill the glass halfway with crushed ice. Stir with a spoon to combine the mint and syrup, and to chill the cup.
Fill with Ice: Add more crushed ice until the glass is filled to the top.
Top and Garnish: Top the drink with sparkling water or club soda. Place a fresh mint sprig on top as a garnish and serve with a straw.
