Ingredients
  

For the Dough:

  • 1 1/2 cups warm milk 105°F
  • 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 cup cold unsalted butter cubed
  • 1 egg yolk beaten
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For the Glaze:

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1-2 tablespoons milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Optional Toppings:

  • Granulated sugar
  • Cinnamon sugar
  • Chocolate glaze
  • Fresh fruit

Instructions
 

  • Combine warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit 5 minutes until frothy.
  • Add flour, salt, and cubed butter. Mix until shaggy dough forms.
  • Knead on a floured surface for 10 minutes.
  • Place dough in greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1 hour.
  • Punch down, then roll out to 1/4-inch thickness.
  • Cut donuts using a donut cutter.
  • Let rise again for 30 minutes.
  • Heat oil to 350°F.
  • Fry donuts 2–3 minutes each side until golden.
  • Drain on paper towels.
  • Glaze while warm with preferred topping.

Notes

  • Swap milk with buttermilk for richer flavor.
  • Add cinnamon to the dough for warmth.
  • Customize toppings: sprinkles, nuts, or flavored glazes.
  • Store in an airtight container for 2 days
