For the Coconut Paste:
- 1.5 cups grated coconut
- 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
- 1 green chili optional
- 1/2 inch ginger chopped
- Water for grinding
For the Curry:
- 300 grams fish fillets kingfish, seer, or cod
- 2 tbsp tamarind paste
- 1 tbsp red chili powder
- 1 tsp coriander powder
- 1 tsp cumin powder
- 1/2 tsp garam masala
- Salt to taste
- 1 cup coconut milk
- 2 tbsp vegetable oil
- 1 tsp mustard seeds
- 10-12 curry leaves
- 1 onion finely chopped
- 1 green chili slit (optional)
- Chopped cilantro for garnish
Grind coconut, turmeric, chili, and ginger with water to a smooth paste.
Marinate fish with tamarind paste, red chili powder, coriander, cumin, garam masala, and salt for 30 mins.
Heat oil, splutter mustard seeds, add curry leaves, onion, and green chili. Sauté until translucent.
Add coconut paste and cook for 3–4 minutes.
Pour in 1/2 cup water, bring to a boil.
Add marinated fish and simmer 5–7 minutes until done.
Add coconut milk, simmer for 2–3 minutes.
Garnish with cilantro and serve hot with rice or appams.
